New b-solutions project launched to support cross-border farmers’ markets on the Hungarian-Slovenian border

On 7 July 2025, the “Breaking Barriers for Local Farmers’ Markets at the SI-HU border” project officially launched, with the aim of supporting small-scale farmers in the Hungarian–Slovenian border region.
New b-solutions project launched to support cross-border farmers’ markets on the Hungarian-Slovenian border

The three-month initiative seeks to identify and address the legal, administrative, and informational barriers that currently hinder producers from participating in local markets across the border.

The project is led by the Pannon European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (Pannon EGTC) in partnership with MURABA EGTC, and it is funded through the b-solutions programme, which provides expert support for overcoming cross-border obstacles where no EU-level solution currently exists.

Two experienced partners are carrying out the professional work: CESCI (Central European Service for Cross-border Initiatives), analyzing the Hungarian legal framework, anda Slovenian legal expert, examining the Slovenian side's market access regulations.

The project will develop practical proposals to simplify cross-border access for local farmers. These include bilingual visual guides, a digital information platform, and concise summaries of tax, licensing, and food safety requirements. In addition, the project aims to strengthen long-term cooperation between local authorities, market operators, and regulatory bodies.

Although the region is rich in agricultural tradition and demand for local products is high on both sides, producers—such as beekeepers, cheesemakers, or vegetable growers—often cannot sell just a few kilometers away due to complex rules and a lack of clear information. The project seeks to remove these barriers.

The project will conclude on 6 October 2025, and its findings will be made publicly available to serve as a replicable model for other EU border regions facing similar challenges.
