Stronger Together – Enhancing Regional Cooperation in the Danube Basin

The event aimed to strengthen cross-border cooperation in the fields of water management, disaster risk reduction, and climate risk management.
More than 80 participants – including experts, decision-makers, civil society and youth representatives – attended the workshop from both EU and non-EU countries, including delegates from the European Commission, Danube Strategy Point, Regional Cooperation Council, ICPDR, and the Sava Commission. I participated in the event on behalf of the Pannon European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC) with the support of CESCI.
The programme placed special emphasis on flash flood forecasting, the application of nature-based solutions (NBS), the coordination of volunteers, and the use of artificial intelligence in early warning systems. Participants engaged in interactive “World Café” discussions on local preparedness, community communication, and youth engagement. The event also revealed common challenges such as the reliability of forecasting systems, complex permitting procedures, and the lack of accessible communication of professional information.
One of the key outcomes of the event was the development of a targeted Action Plan, which outlines six priorities, including promoting the use of NBS, enhancing forecasting and data-sharing platforms, and involving youth and civil actors in risk communication. The organizers left the consultation process open, inviting further suggestions, project ideas, and cooperation opportunities.
The workshop confirmed that macro-regional, inclusive, and practice-oriented cooperation is essential to strengthen the resilience and adaptability of the Danube Region.
