A joint cross-border project in the field of mosquito abatement is taking shape at the initiative of Croatia.
The development of the mosquito eradication project idea has begun

The initiator of the project is the Croatian Osijek-Baranja Development Agency, which aims to coordinate joint development and mitigating measures against mosquito infestation in the Hungarian-Croatian border region. The possible project partners are the Osijek-Baranja County Public Health Education Institute, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Eszék, Department of Biology; the Szentágothai Research Center of the University of Pécs, the National Public Health Center.

The aim of the project is to create a cross-border cooperation framework for the research and development, control and prevention of mosquito infestation in the Hungarian-Croatian border region, especially with regard to the large proportion of river areas along the border. In addition to control and prevention, cooperation in order to mitigate the effects of climate change, the fight against the appearance of borderline invasive mosquito species is also part of the project.

The future partners want to create an institutional and organizational cooperation framework in the field of mosquito control, prevention of mosquito infection, and the fight against invasive mosquito species.

Part of the project is the development of planning for the transformation of the infrastructural facilities of the ReCIT in Osijek, the creation of the Regional Mosquito Research and Treatment Center by transforming the existing ReCIT facilities and equipment in Osijek.

The Szentágothai Research Center has been researching the infection data of the composition of species living in the border area for a long time, which can be further expanded within the framework of the project, and it is possible to create an online database on mosquito infestation in the border area.

The project also focuses on the analysis and identification of applicable technologies for the control and prevention of mosquito infections, as well as their investigation in the border area.

The expected result of the project is the experimental testing of the solutions developed in the border area and the publication of the research results.

Preliminary estimate of the size of the project: 2.5–3 million EUR, the planned duration of its implementation is 36 months.
